Pantone Announce Viva Magenta as Colour of the Year 2023

Pantone® recently announced ‘Viva Magenta’ as their ‘Colour of the Year’ for 2023. A strong, vibrant shade of red, in their words, it “merges the richness, warmth, and strength of natural matters with the rich, open horizons of the digital world. The result is a shade of red that expands our horizons of authenticity.”

Viva Magenta is a vivacious colour that will speak to those among us who favour a bold burst of colour in everything they do. In saying that, even a small pop of this colour will add a lot to a multitude of projects, be it domestic or commercial and interior and exterior. Pantone® have already introduced Viva Magenta into the Metaverse. As they put it: “The metaverse creates new opportunities for us to express ourselves, and the raw fortitude of Viva Magenta inspires us to do so with confidence and bravery.”

Despite using Viva Magenta within such a modern space, it has its roots in something far more historic, or should that be ‘pre-historic’! Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute says:

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE® 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE® 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE® 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

It is this inner strength that Pantone® feels we can draw upon as the world weathers disruptive events such as the pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, climate change and unstable economies. Viva Magenta represents rebellion, strength and fierceness yet at the same time expresses grace, softness and humanity.

We are sure to see Viva Magenta appear in graphic design, interiors, packaging and clothing in the coming months. What do you think? Would you use a Pantone® Viva Magenta-coloured fabric in your office fitout in 2023?
